Hard Disc Artworks - What on Earth are these?

"49 Little Slices of Company X"

If art is the process of making something out of nothing and then selling it, then this is art.

I make these pieces using the internal platters from decommissioned computer hard drives that have seen service within different companies.

The platters must all come from the same company so that the data that still resides on their surfaces originated with that company.

The resulting pieces are stunning and form large partial mirrors that are ideal for corporate receptions and open areas.

But, for me, it is the data on the platters that makes creating the works so appealing.

If you'd like one of these for your company, please email me (disc-art@quincunx.com).

Sizes & shapes

For square works, I make anything from a 3x3 (24x24 in) upwards. I'm currently working on a 10x10 which is nearly 6 feet x 6 feet. It will command a big space.

6x6 array of 3.25" platters (42 x 42 inches)

7x7 array of 3.75" platters (48 x 48 inches)

A closer look...

These things are tricky to make and, being mirrors, even harder to photograph.

Most hard drive platters are either 3.25" or 3.75". Modern platters are made of glass with a very tough magnetic metal coating. Older drives have aluminium platters but the two types look identical and can be mixed in these works.

The platters are mounted on high quality, fade-proof white acrylic. The works are framed in silvered wood without glass so that they can be polished easily. They are extremely durable and are built to last for many decades.
